Kelly is a small rural community in eastern North Carolina, in the "toe" of Bladen County, centered on NC Highway 53 between Atkinson and White Lake. It has rich soil and has been known for its good farming land. The long-leaf pine and hardwood trees grow abundantly in this area. The Cape Fear River creates its boundary line on the south, flowing from mid-state into the Atlantic Ocean, this large stream runs through Bladen. The Black River is on the eastern boundary. Nearby is Elwell's Ferry, an old fashioned two-car cable ferry which crosses the Cape Fear River to Carvers on N.C. 87. For the traveler looking for fragments of the past, here is a side trip to make.. Several generations have been born here and lived and raised their families here.

Bladen County is the third largest county in North Carolina, with 879 square miles. Its location in Southeastern North Carolina assures Bladen of a good climate, with an average annual temperature of 63 degrees, precipitation of 49.1", and an annual snowfall of less than 4". The county lies within 25 miles of the Atlantic Ocean. Of the 100 counties in North Carolina, 55 were once a part of Bladen County which accounts for the name "Bladen, The Mother County".
